Scavenger Gets 6 Strokes Of Cane For Stealing N4,800 Phone In Ibadan

A 20-year-old man identified as Musibau Lateef is to get six strokes of the cane for stealing a mobile phone worth N4,800.

After pleading not guilty to the charges brought against [sic] at an Ibadan Chief Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, Chief Magistrate Oladele Adisa held that the accused, Lateef, was guilty as charged.

He then ordered that the accused person receives six strokes of the cane to serve as a warning him to henceforth be of good character.

Lateef, an aluminium scavenger in Ibadan area of Oyo State, according to the prosecutor, Corporal Sikiru Opaleye, had on Thursday, stolen a mobile phone belonging to one Saratu Olubode, who is a food vendor.

Olubode later begged the court to drop the case due to family pressure.

Lateef had escaped being lynched by angry mob in Ibadan when he attempted to run after committing the act. It took the prompt intervention of the police who rescued him.
