Minors flogged for hawking in Abuja

About 25 hawkers who are minors were last Friday ordered to be flogged six strokes of cane while 73 others were sentenced to one month imprisonment by an Abuja mobile court for hawking in the streets of Abuja.

Those flogged are Juliet Adobi, Agnes Adebola, Peter Racael,Suleiman Abubakar, Alex Emma, Emeka Eze, Queen Steven, Chidima Ugu, Haruna Abdullahi, Idoko Akoji, Keleche Paul, Sunday John, Basil Okorie, Danladi Zubair, Isa Adamu, Solomon Imiginego, Nulu Husy Chimezee Michael, Clever Uyeni, Innocent Unwapa, Saviour Isaiah, Bala Musa, Enock Aso and Yahuza Damani.

The prosecutor, Barrister Eze E Eze, had earlier informed the court that on November 5, 2010, the accused were arrested by ministerial task force while displaying their items at road junctions and unauthorized places in the city, an offence punishable under Section 35 (1h) of the AEPB Act No 10 of 1997.

When the charge was read to the accused persons they pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, promising not to do it again.

The prosecutor urged the court to try the accused summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure code.

Magistrate Aminu Abdullahi sentenced each of the accused persons to one month imprisonment with a fine of N2,500 and ordered that the minors among them be given six strokes of cane.

15 flogged for hawking

Fifteen underage hawkers were last Friday ordered to be flogged seven strokes of cane by an Abuja magistrate for hawking in Abuja.

64 others were sentenced to one month imprisonment with an option of fine.

The minors were Richard Omoh,Okedah Dike, Rabiu Musa, Musa Gyan, Samuel Chukwu Chukwu, Ali Umar, Oliver Nwode, Mustapha Ali, Hadijat Babatude, Bashir Abdul, Nwankpo Stephen, Stephen Ayuba, Salisu Muhammed, Bala Karimu, Nasiru Abdullahi and Abudulrazark Umar.

The prosecutor, Barrister Eze E Eze, had earlier informed the court that on October 5, 2010, the accused were arrested by the FCT Ministerial Task Force while displaying their items at road junctions or unauthorized places in the city, an offence punishable under Section 35 (1h) of the Abuja Environmental Protection Board ( AEPB) Act No 10 of 1997.

When the charge was read to the accused persons, they pleaded guilty and begged for leniency, promising not to do it again.

The prosecutor urged the court to try the accused summarily under Section 157 of the Criminal Procedure code.

Magistrate Aminu Abdullahi sentenced each of the accused persons to one week imprisonment with a fine of N3,000 and ordered that the minors be given seven strokes of cane.
